Describing People in Russian: Appearance

Do you know how to describe your friend, parent, teacher or anyone in Russian? If you don’t, just read on and you’ll learn some new words and simple examples of sentences which help us describe physical appearance.

Here are some lists of adjectives to talk about hair, face and other parts of the body in Russian.

Hair (волосы [‘volosi])

Adjectives to describe hair:

светлые – blond

тёмные – dark

рыжие – red

русые – light brown

прямые – straight

кудрявый – curly

короткие – short

длинные – long

Nouns to describe people with different types of hair:

блондин/ блондинка – a blond/ a blonde

брюнет/ брюнетка – a brunet/ a brunette

рыжий (рыжеволосый)/ рыжая (рыжеволосая) – red-haired man/woman

лысый (m.)/ лысая (f.) – bald

кудрявый/ кудрявая – curly-haired (man/ woman)

длинноволосый/длинноволосая – long-haired (man/woman)

Note that some words can be both nouns and adjectives at the same time. It is quite common in Russian. For example, рыжий can mean a color of someone’s hair and also a person who has red hair.

Тот рыжий мальчик мне улыбнулся. – That red-haired boy smiled at me.

Я рыжий, но это не моя вина. – I’m a redhead but it’s not my fault.

Он всегда был кудрявым. – He’s always been curly-haired.

У него кудрявая голова. – He has curly hair (literally: head).

Face (лицо [li’tso])

круглое лицо – round face

худое лицо – thin face

щека – cheek (pl. щёки)

подбородок – chin

лоб – forehead

челюсть – jaw

ухо – ear (pl. уши)

усы – mustache

борода – beard

Для пожилых людей очень характерно иметь большие уши и гигантские носы. – It is very common for older people have very big ears and giant noses.

Очень высокий лоб считался признаком особенной красоты. – It was considered to be especially beautiful to have a very high forehead.

Eyes (глаза [glaza])

There are many adjectives to describe eye color and shape.

светлые – light

тёмные – dark

голубые – blue

зелёные – green

карие – brown

черные – black

большие – big

маленькие – little

узкие – narrow

бровь – eyebrow (pl. брови)

веко – eyelid (pl. веки)

ресницы – eyelashes

У него такие длинные ресницы. Это очень красиво. – He’s got such long eyelashes. It’s so pretty.

Примерно 8% населения мира в настоящее время имеют голубые глаза. – According to research, almost 8% of the world’s population now has the blue eye.

У него были дико густые брови. – He had these crazy bushy eyebrows.

Нос (nose [nos])

длинный – long

маленький – small

аккуратный – neat, small, pretty

большой – big

Довольно долго я думала, что у меня очень большой нос. – For many years I truly believed I had a big nose.

У неё более аккуратный нос, чем у меня. – She has a prettier nose than me.

Lips/mouth (губы/ рот)

тонкие губы – thin lips

пухлые губы – full lips

большой рот – big mouth

маленький рот – small mouth

Полные, пухлые губы часто считаются признаком хорошего здоровья, молодости и красоты. – Full, plump lips are often considered a sign of good health, beauty and youth.

How to describe a face: Examples

Here are some more examples of how we describe people’s appearance in Russian.

У нее очень широкий нос и маленькое лицо. – She has a very wide nose and a tiny face.

Он высокий, круглолицый, широкоглазый с мягкими, но детализированными чертами лица. – He’s tall, round-faced, wide-eyed with soft yet detailed features.

У него сильный подбородок, хороший профиль и дикий сверкающий взгляд настоящего хищника. – He has a strong chin, good profile and a wild sparkling sight of the real predator.

У неё были длинные волосы, почти до талии. – She used to has long hair, almost down to the waist

У него довольно большой лоб для его возраста. – He has a fairly large forehead for his age.

Человек может иметь правильный овал лица, аккуратный нос и изумительно красивые глаза, однако всю картину способен испортить выступающий вперед или срезанный подбородок. – A person can have the right oval face, a neat nose and amazingly beautiful eyes, but the whole picture is able to spoil the protruding forward or sloping chin.

Adjectives to Describe a Person’s Build and Height

высокий – tall

низкий – short

thin – худой

дохлый – very thin (offensive)

стройный – slim, slender

хорошо сложенный – well-built

пухлый, плотный, упитанный – plump

толстый – thick

жирный – fat (offensive)

Все его пятеро родных братьев – мужчины среднего роста. – All of his five siblings – are male of average height.

Она была высокая и стройная. – She was tall and slim.

He’s healthy, not old and well-built. – Он здоровый, ещё не такой старый и вполне хорошо сложенный.
