A person who stands out from others, different from the surrounding people. It’s a good analogy because white crows are very rare.

Биться как рыба об лёд

Literally: hit the ice like a fish

Painfully looking for a way out of a difficult situation

С утра до вечера бьются крестьяне как рыба об лёд, а все нет ничего. – From morning till night the peasant would struggle, like a fish hitting the ice, but nothing came of it all.

Быть на седьмом небе (от счастья)

Literally: be in the seventh heaven

To experience a state of bliss, happiness; “to be like in paradise.”

It’s similar to English idioms ‘be on cloud nine’ and ‘be over the moon’.

Он будет на седьмом небе от счастья. – He will be over the moon.

Брать с потолка

Literally: to take from the ceiling

To say something as it comes to mind, at random, without sufficient grounds.

Он просто взял это число с потолка. – He just took this number from the ceiling. (He has made that number up).

Бросать/пускать пыль в глаза

Literally: throw off dust in the eyes

Deceitfully give someone a false impression of their capabilities, abilities or means: to show off.

Менталитет россиянина устроен так, что нужно утереть нос или пустить пыль в глаза, купив дорогую машину. – The mentality of the Russians is arranged so that they need to outdo or to throw dust in the eyes buying an expensive car.

Быть под колпаком

Literally: to be under the hood

To be under secret surveillance.

С этого момента жизнь его семьи была «под колпаком» КГБ. – From that moment his family’s life was “under the hood” of the KGB.

Валять дурака

to idle, spend time doing nothing

Synonyms: пинать балду, бить баклуши, плевать в потолок

Also: to pretend to be incomprehensible, stupid

Вертеться/крутиться как белка в колесе

Literally: to spin like a squirrel in a cage

To be in constant trouble, to do many different things, to fuss.

Матерям приходится крутиться, как белка в колесе. – Mothers have to spin like a squirrel in a wheel.

Literally: this is where the dog is burried

В подмётки не годится

to be worse than something or someone in their properties, qualities

Эта женщина тебе в подмётки не годится. – That woman is not on your level.

Этот клоун тебе в подмётки не годится, а он делает миллионы. – That clown doesn’t have half your talent and he’s making a fortune.

Вставать с левой ноги (не с той ноги)

to be in a bad mood, in an irritable state

Кто-то встал не с той ноги. – Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

Вставлять палки в колеса

to (try to) hinder someone intentionally in some matter or in the realization of something (= throw a monkey wrench into smth.)

Мы надеемся, что они не будут вставлять палки в колеса. – I hope they will not put a stick in the wheels.

Выйти из себя

to get angry at someone

Я вышел из себя за ужином и зашел слишком далеко. – I lost my temper at dinner and went too far.

Высосать из пальца

Literally: to suck from the finger

to say or assert something that is not based in fact, that one creates in his mind

Показания той женщины “высосаны из пальца“. – This woman’s story is made of cardboard.

Это целиком и полностью «фейковая новость», высосанная из пальца. – It’s entirely “fake news,” sucked from the finger.

Голодный как волк

very hungry

Я голодный как волк. – I’m very hungry.

Два сапога пара

the two people in question are similar with regard to personality traits, behaviors etc (negative)

Вы с Мартой – два сапога пара. – You and Martha are two peas in a pod.

Делать из мухи слона

to exaggerate something, to give importance to something insignificant

Только не делай из мухи слона, ладно? – Just don’t make a big deal of it, okay?

Деловая колбаса

an eager beaver

somebody who works too hard or sb who enjoys being busy or active (jokingly)

Денег куры не клюют

a lot of money

Если у тебя денег куры не клюют, с твоими желаниями будут считаться. – If you woul have so much money to burn your wishes will be respected.

to get from under the ground, to get something no matter how difficult

Я тебя из-под земли достану! – I will scrape you out from earth!

about a frank, straightforward, open person, unpretentious in his relations with people

В России душа всех людей буквально нараспашку. – In Russia, the soul of all people is literally quite open.

Душа (уходит) в пятки

to have heart at heels, to jump out of skin, one’s heart leaps into one’s boots

У меня душа в пятки ушла. – I think my soul just left my body.

Охота поехать, а у самой душа в пятки уходит, боюсь, и всё. – I want to go, but I’m getting the jitters, so scared I am.

Дырка от бублика

nothing

Всё, что у меня есть – большая жирная дырка от бублика. – All I’ve got is a big, steamy pile of nothing.

Дышать на ладан

to be about to die, break, stop functioning

Сегодня Советская империя рухнула, исчезли Варшавский договор и Советский Союз, а коммунистическое движение дышит на ладан. – Today, the Soviet Empire is gone, the Warsaw Pact is gone, the Soviet Union is gone, and the Communist movement is moribund.

Заключённое Японией при посредничестве США оборонное сотрудничество с Южной Кореей дышит на ладан. – Japan’s US-brokered defense cooperation with south Korea is breaking down.

Ежу понятно

(this is) a no-brainer, this isn’t rocket science (said of something obvious and easy to understand)

Ждать у моря погоды

to wait for something passively, not undertaking any action

Бесполезно сидеть и ждать у моря погоды. – It makes no sense to sit and wait for the sea weather.

Жить как кошка с собакой

live a cat-and-dog life; quarrel like cat and dog

Япония и Китай всегда жили как кошка с собакой. – Japan and China were always like cat and dog.

Жить как на вулкане

live under precarious, dangerous conditions; sit on a volcano, sit on a powder keg

Мы здесь живём, как на вулкане. – We live here, as if we live on a volcano.

Задать жару

to fight somebody vehemently; to overwhelm, defeat someone

Мы им задали жару, правда, сэр? – We showed ’em, didn’t we, sir?

Заколдованный круг

a vicious circle (a situation in which solving one problem creates an even more difficult problem, thus making ultimate resolution impossible)

Literally: not pull the stars down from the sky

to be average, have mediocre abilities

Учился в школе, как говорят, «средненько», звёзд с неба не хватал. – He was mediocre at school, as they say, did not have enough stars from the sky.

Знать как свои пять пальцев

to know something very well

Я знаю это место как свои пять пальцев. – I know this place like the back of my hand.

Игра в одни ворота

game with one goal-mouth

a total mismatch, a walkover (for the stronger team)

Это определённым образом “игра в одни ворота“, так как журналист не уделяет внимание вопросам, которые естественным образом появляются, исходя из ответов респондента. – It’s a kind of “game to a single goal” since the questions being naturally revealed by the respondent’s answers remain beyond the journalist’s attention.

Играть с огнём

to play with fire, to act too risky

Если играешь с огнём, то рано или поздно обожжёшься. – If you play with fire, sooner or later you are going to get burned.

Идти по чьим-либо стопам

to follow someone in your actions

Он воспитал достойных детей, которые пошли по его стопам. – He brought up children who became dignified citizens and followed in his footsteps.

Идти против течения

Literally: go against the stream

to live or act in an independent fashion, in defiance of prevailing views, ideas etc.

Я всю жизнь плыву против течения. – All my life I have been going against the stream.

Изливать/излить душу

to reveal candidly to somebody one’s anxieties, worries, innermost feeling

Хорошему другу можно всегда излить душу. – You can always pour out your heart to a good friend.

Искать иголку в стоге сена

Literally: to look for a needle in a bundle of hay

to look for something or someone virtually impossible to find

Ты ведь понимаешь, что это идиотизм, искать иголку в стоге сена? – You do realize the whole “needle in a haystack” absurdity of all this, – don’t you?

Как бельмо на глазу

We say this phrase about something or someone very annoying.

Ты как бельмо у него на глазу. – You are the thorn in his side.

Как ветром сдуло

said when something or someone disappeared very quickly

Я пригрозила ему, и его сразу как ветром сдуло. – I threatened him and he took off like the wind.

(Как) гора с плеч свалилась/упала

said when relief came, anxieties, doubts dissipated (usually after getting rid of difficult worries, duties)

У меня просто гора с плеч свалилась. – I’m so relieved.

Как гром среди ясного неба

Как рыба в воде

totally at ease, like a duck to water

В зале суда он чувствует себя как рыба в воде и легко принимает важные решения. – In the courtroom she feels like a fish in water and easily makes the important decisions.

Капля в море

an insignificant amount (when compared with the amount that is needed, was previously available etc)

Для огромных корпораций эти суммы – капля в море. – For the big corporates this is a drop in the ocean.

Перечисленные выше достопримечательности – лишь капля в море архитектурного и исторического разнообразия Харькова. – The sights listed above are just a drop in the sea of Kharkov’s architectural and historical diversity.

to fight fire with fire

Видишь ли, нельзя клин клином вышибать. – See, you can’t fight fire with fire.

Кот наплакал

Поскольку мы ещё студенты – денег у нас кот наплакал. – Given that we’re students, we don’t have a lot of cash.

Краем глаза

to see something/someone for a brief moment, out of the corner of one’s eye, have a glimpse of somebody/someone

Я краем глаза видел, что она пялится на меня. – I saw out of the corner of my eye, she was checking up on me.

Крепкий орешек

a person who is unbending, difficult to deal with, convince, subjugate etc; tough cookie (lit. nut)

Я думаю, ты довольно крепкий орешек. – I think you’re a pretty tough cookie.

Кровь с молоком

about someone very healthy-looking, with good facial color

Купить кота в мешке

to buy, get something without having seen it, without having carefully examined its quality (buy a pig in a poke)

Женщины, когда выходят замуж, покупают кота в мешке. – Women when they marry buy a cat in the bag.

Курам на смех

something that is completely senseless, absurd

Местные новости курам на смех. – Local news is a joke.

Кусать локти

to be grieved, to regret some kind of failure, often irreparable

Вы можете быть реально не готовы к тому, что вас ждёт, но отчаиваться и кусать локти явно не стоит, даже если вы, как вам кажется, упустили возможность. – You could be really unprepared for what awaits you, but there’s clearly no point in losing heart or kicking yourself for it, even if it seems like you’ve missed an opportunity.

Лезть на рожон

to ask for trouble, to undertake something risky, potentially dangerous

Он не лезет на рожон, но если его спровоцировали, он не будет отступать. – He does not look for trouble but if he is provoked, he will not back down.

Literally: to be in someone’s skin

to be in the same unpleasant position or adverse circumstances as someone else

to retreat, surrender, to have one’s tail between one’s legs, to be like a whipped puppy

Он поджал хвост и убежал. – He took the coward’s way out.

Подливать масла в огонь

Literally: to add fuel to the fire

to intensify a feeling (often negative), a mood, someone’s interest in someone or something etc

«Россия вмешивается, чтобы подлить масла в огонь конфликта и раздуть его, а не разрешить», – добавил министр. – “Russia is intervening in order to add fuel to the fire of the conflict and inflate it, not resolve it”.

Подложить свинью

to play somebody a dirty trick

Я не хотел подложить свинью своему лучшему другу. – I never wanted to do the dirty on my best friend.

(Похожи) как две капли воды

Не как две капли, конечно, но были очень похожи. – Yes, not identical, but they bore a great resemblance.

По уши

completely, entirely

Она была по уши в вас влюблена. – She was head over heels in love with you.

Прибрать к рукам

to arbitrarily take possession of something

to drive someone into a corner, to put someone in a hopeless situation

Literally: to go through fire and water

Рубить сук, на котором сидишь

Literally: to chop off the limb of the tree one sits on

to do something that will bring harm or trouble upon oneself

to die

Он склеил ласты. – He kicked the bucket.

do hard, boring, unpleasant work; carry out heavy, tedious duties

Убить (сразу) двух зайцев

to solve two problems with one single action (same as “kill two birds with one stone”, but in Russian we kill hares)

Мы занимаемся пропагандой среди местных жителей, поскольку продаем топливо, – так мы пытаемся убить двух зайцев. – We do community outreach as we market our fuel, so we try to kill two birds with one stone.

Ударить в грязь лицом

to disgrace, to be ashamed

Главное не ударить в грязь лицом! – The most important part is to not lose face (to not be embarrassed)!

У чёрта на куличках

about a very remote and deaf place: very far, no one knows where, in the wilderness

Я живу у чёрта на куличках. – I live in the middle of nowhere.

Утереть нос

Literally: to wipe one’s nose

to outdo someone, to prove one’s superiority in something

Я хочу утереть нос тем, кто отвернулся от меня. – I want to outdo those who turned their back on me.

Ходить вокруг да около

to beat about the bush

Прекрати ходить вокруг да около и расскажи мне. – Stop beating around the bush and tell me.
