How to Pronounce the Russian Letter Ц

Russian learners often struggle with the letter ц. Unlike familiar sounds in English, ц makes the sharp “ts” sound heard in words like цапля and цыпленок. Mastering this new articulation can seem daunting.

But what if I told you there’s a tasty English word that can help you practice that troublesome ц?

That word is “pizza”!

When you say “pizza”, your tongue makes the same “ts” sound needed for Russian’s letter ц. In Russian, by the way, the word looks like this: пиЦЦа. Double ц, see that? But in fact we just pronounce a single ц.

However, in English, this “ts” sound does not occur at the start of native words (not counting the borrowed word “tsunami”), so words like “царь” and “цирк” may be difficult for you initially.

Here are some tips to help you practice pronouncing this unique sound if you’re struggling:

  • Familiarize yourself with words containing ц. Some good ones to start with include цунами, цапля, цыплёнок, цветок, цирк, цоколь, царь, конец.
  • Listen carefully to recordings of native Russian speakers pronouncing these ц words. Pay special attention to the articulation at the beginning of each word.
  • Start slowly. Isolate just the “ts” sound and hold it for a few seconds before trying the whole word.
  • Say the words aloud, focusing on getting each initial ц correct. Be patient with yourself if it takes some time to get used to.
  • Practice daily if possible. Repetition over time will help train your mouth and tongue to produce the “ts” sound naturally.

How to pronounce ц in Russian

And you know what? The ‘ts’ sound actually occurs much more often in Russian than it seems! If you didn’t know, reflexive verbs in Russian have a distinctive feature: they end not in “ть” but in “ться”. And this very “ться”, which looks quite daunting, is read very simply as ЦА (TSA). The same goes for endings like “тся” – they are all read identically. Нравица (нравиться), кажеца (кажется), кружица (кружиться), etc. Just don’t write that way, it would be a gross mistake!

With regular, focused practice, the distinctive “ts” of the Cyrillic letter ц will become easier to pronounce. Be patient, listen to examples, and keep at it – you’ll be pronouncing ц like a natural Russian in no time!
