There are 10 vowels in the Russian language: А, Е, Ё, И, О, У, Ы, Э, Ю, Я. Quite a big variety. But, at least, in most situations one vowel corresponds to one sound. It makes the learning process much easier.
We’ve already learnt the Russian alphabet, so now let’s remember how we pronounce the vowel sounds.
а – [a] bar
я – [ya] yard
о – [o] not
ё – [yo] yours
у – [oo] spoon
ю – [yu] youth
э – [e] end
e – [ye] yes
и – [ee] – see
ы – [i] – sit
You may have noticed that vowels are listed in pairs. Every two sounds are very similar. We just add [y] to [a], [o], [e] and [u], and get soft sounds (though и and ы differ from all these pairs a little).
In Russian phonetics, the distinction between hard and soft vowels plays a significant role in pronunciation and word formation. The softness or hardness of a vowel is determined by the accompanying consonant or the presence of a soft sign (ь) after the vowel.
Hard vowels in Russian are pronounced with a relatively stronger and more retracted tongue position.
Here are the Russian vowels classified as hard:
– а (a)
– о (o)
– у (oo)
– ы (i)
– э (e)
On the other hand, soft vowels in Russian are pronounced with a relatively softer and more forward tongue position. They are typically accompanied by soft consonants (consonants followed by a soft sign or the letters й, ё, е, ю, and я), and this combination produces a soft or palatalized pronunciation.
Here are the Russian vowels classified as soft:
– я (ya)
– ё (yo)
– е (ye)
– ю (yu)
– и (ee)
So, the pairs look like this:

- Practice minimal pairs. Focus on pairs of words that differ only in their vowel sounds, such as “кот” and “кит”. Repeat them aloud to highlight the distinctions.
- Develop muscle memory. Forming the correct mouth shape and positioning your tongue correctly are essential for accurate pronunciation. Practice vowel sounds slowly, exaggerating the positions until they become natural.
