Preposition о: when do we use it?
The preposition “о” in Russian conveys the idea of being “about” something. It is used with the prepositional case.
Examples of how we use ‘о’
To understand how the preposition is used in Russian, let’s look at some examples of word combinations and sentences.
О ком? – About whom?
о нём – about him
о ней – about her
о нас – about us
Important Note: о becomes об in front of a vowel. Sometimes you can also see another variation of this preposition – обо.
об Анастасии – about Anastasia
обо мне – about me
обо всех – about everyone
О чём? – About what?
о том – about that
об этом – about this
обо всём – about everything
Мы иногда часами разговаривали, могли говорить обо всём. – Sometimes we would sit for hours, just talking about everything.
о фильме – about a film
о погоде – about weather
говорить о погоде – to talk about the weather
разговор о будущем – a conversation about the future
книга о России – a book about Russia
книга о приключениях – a book about adventures
мечта о свободе – a dream of freedom
фильм о любви – a movie about love
рассказывать о прошлом – to talk about the past
думать о будущем – to think about the future
О чём эта книга? – What is this book about?
По названию можно догадаться, о чём этот фильм. – From the title, one can guess what this film is about.
Эта песня о любви. – This song is about love.
Я думаю о тебе каждый день. – I think about you every day.
О чём вы говорите в своём новом видео? – What are you talking about in your new video?

Verbs that are followed by “о”
The preposition “о” is commonly used after various verbs to indicate the topic or subject of discussion. So, first of all, the list includes all speaking verbs: говорить, рассказывать, сказать, поведать, разговаривать, беседовать, болтать, спрашивать, спорить etc.
