How to Use The Verb nravitsya (to like) in Russian
We rarely use the verb нравиться in “noun + verb” constructions. In other words, there is no literal “I like” in Russian.
When we say “я нравлюсь”, “ты нравишься”, “он нравится”, “они нравятся”, it means “somebody likes me/you/him/they”. For example:
Я ему нравлюсь. – He likes me.
Ты мне нравишься. – I like you.
Я нравлюсь себе. – I like myself.
So, how do we use нравиться in Russian to say that YOU like something? It’s very easy.
We just start the sentence with the personal pronoun in the Dative case and add the verb нравится/нравятся.
If we want to say that we like one particular thing (or any action), use нравится.
The conjugation is really easy. The verb doesn’t change at all.

Example sentences:
Мне нравится твоя рубашка. – I like your shirt. (Just this shirt.)
Тебе нравится этот фильм? – Do you like this film? (One film.)
Ей нравится джаз. – She likes jazz.
Мне это нравится. – I like it.
Мне это не нравится. – I don’t like it.
Нам здесь не нравится. – We don’t like it here.
Вам нравится жить в деревне? – Do you like living in the village?
Думаешь, мне она понравится? – Do you think I will like her?
When we like several things at once (or the following noun is plural), we use нравятся.
The conjugation of this form is also very simple, we don’t change the verb:

Examples:
Моему сыну нравятся книги о животных. – My son likes books about animals (several/some books).
Они нам не нравятся. – We don’t like them (they – plural).
The verb нравиться in the past
The past tense is also quite simpe. We have only four forms to remember:
- нравился (masculine)
- нравилась (feminine)
- нравилось (neuter)
- нравились (plural)
We choose the form depending on the object gender, NOT subject.
Examples:
Он мне никогда не нравился. – I never liked him.
Она мне тоже никогда не нравилась. – I never liked her as well.
Раньше ей не нравились эти цветы, а теперь нравятся. – She didn’t used to like these flowers, but now she does.
The verb also has a perfective form: понравиться – to come to like
Ему это понравилось. – He got/came to like it.
Мне не понравилось жить в Лондоне. – I didn’t like living in London.
